Healthy Families Medi-Cal for Children
The Healthy Families program provides low-cost health coverage for children,
ages 1 to 19. The program offers medical, dental and vision services for
a small monthly fee called a premium. Premiums are as low as $4.00 up to
a maximum of $27.00 per family, per month. The program enables more children
to qualify for medical coverage with a simplified mail-in application package.
The program is available to individuals that meet all of
the following criteria:
- Children should be between ages 1 and 19
- Children must be California residents
- Family income must be greater than 100% and below 250%
of the Federal Poverty Limit (FPL)
- Children may not be eligible for no-cost Medi-Cal benefits
- Children may not be covered by employer-sponsored health
insurance within the previous three months
- Children must be U.S. citizens or eligible qualified aliens.
The Healthy Families program is available for children of
single or two-parent working parents. Individuals may apply
up to 3 months in advance for an unborn child, or for a child
who will turn 1 or 6 years old and lose their no-cost Medi-Cal
coverage.
The Healthy Families program benefits package includes preventative
health and dental care services with no co-payment. Most basic
and emergency services have a co-payment of $5.00. Some of
the services available through the Healthy Families program
are:
- Coverage for medically necessary hospitalization
- Physician, medical, and surgical services
- Inpatient and outpatient services
- Prescription drugs
- Well-child care services
- Family planning services
- Mental health services
- Occupational, physical and speech therapies
- Laboratory and X-ray services
- Dental benefits, including preventive and diagnostic services
- Vision benefits, including annual exams and eyeglasses
