Elders & Disabled Adults

Part of our mission is to protect, support, and advocate for an aging population, particularly those with disabilities. This is done through various programs:

Division of Adult Protection
APS responds to reports, calls from individuals, concerned citizens, social service and health providers, and law enforcement representatives who have concerns about adults with developmental disabilities, physically and mentally disabled adults, and the elderly, who may be physically or financially abused, neglected, or exploited. The Division of Adult Protection includes the following programs: Adult Protective Services, Public Administrator and Public Guardian-Conservator (Probate and LPS).

In Home Support
IHSS pays chore providers to perform in-home care to low income elderly, blind and disabled persons so that they may remain safely in their own homes.

Medical Care for Elders & Disabled Adults
The specialized Medi-Cal programs processed at the Department of Adult, Aging and Medical Services of Alameda County Social Services. Individuals who are aged, blind or disabled may be eligible for these benefits. The Medi-Cal programs described below are specialized programs that provide only the benefit of paying all or part of the Medicare premiums, co-payments, and deductibles for certain low income individuals, depending on program eligibility.

Veterans Services
The Veterans Service Office provides veterans, their dependents, and/or survivors with information regarding veterans benefits, and assistance with filing benefit claims, waivers and appeals, in order for them to obtain and maintain all available benefits and entitlements for which they are eligible.

Area Agency on Aging
The AAA is the local arm of the national aging network. Federal, state, local governments, private agencies (not for profit as well as for profit), work together to advance the social and economic health and well being of elders (60 and over) in Alameda County.

Long Term Medical Care
Specialized Medi-Cal programs that provide only the benefit of paying all or part of the Medicare premiums, co-payments, and deductibles for certain low income individuals, depending on program eligibility.
